Japanese automotive giants, Toyota and Subaru recently reported to Nikkei Asia that they intend to unveil their second jointly developed electric vehicle by 2026. This new EV, similar to the prior cars; Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, should be another electric SUV. Details however remain scant on the nature and timing of Toyota’s Australian rollout but the car is expected to be rolled out in Japan, Europe, and America.

Production and Key Components
They are the new generations of those models which will be assembled at the Yajima plant in Japan and are likely to be rolling off the line from January 2026. This facility is expected to produce up to 20000 units every month. The new EVs will formally be related in some ways as claimed, just like the bZ4X and Solterra were nearly similar in design features and technology but with distinguishing features such as badging profiles and front differentials. Both vehicles will also use technology from their predecessors to maintain some level of evolutionary progression in their electric vehicle lineup.
Toyota’s and Subaru’s EV Strategy
Subaru, where Toyota has a 20% interest in the company, said in May that they intend to introduce a combined total of four EVs by fiscal year 2026. When these models are expected, one of them included the electric seven-seater SUV, which is planned to transform the production of Toyota in the United States. However, this model has been slow mainly because of redesigns and the slowing rate of electric vehicle sales in the North American market.
Subaru aims to sell around 4-600,000 electric car units per year by 2030, or up to half of the company’s car sales. Toyota, for instance, in 2021 declared it would introduce 10 battery-electric vehicles and operate 1.2 million BEVs by 2026. It also wants to bring out 30 new EV models under both Toyota and Lexus brands by 2030 with an annual sales target of 3.5 million.
Changing Market Conditions
However, these visionary objectives have now recently been adjusted downward by Toyota followed by Wolksvagen, Ford, Volvo, and many more. Because of the decline in EV adoption globally, Toyota has lowered its ambition for 2026 output by one-third to only half a million and 1m respectively. This revision comes after global sales have been slower than expected, with Toyota now predicting 140,000 EV sales for the fiscal year ending March 2024 and 400,000 for the next fiscal year. Initially set to sell 100,000 electric vehicles by the end of 2023, this exposes the company to the current market situation.
The bZ Lineup and Future Expectations
Most of Toyota’s EVs are integrated within its bZ series, which stands for ‘Beyond Zero.’ In the world market, Toyota planned to introduce seven bZ models within 2025. In Australia, Toyota has vowed to have three EVs in its portfolio by mid-decade, so the all-electric bZ4X will first be introduced in Australia in March 2024. In the beginning, only 771 units are being sold, with 1250 forecasted during the first year of the electric vehicles’ introduction, the brand still aims at the electric segment.
It is also worth noticing that the bZ lineup also comprises the second-generation bZ3 electric sedan which was initially released in China. Moreover, the global premiere of serial prototypes of the bZ3C hatchback and bZ3X compact SUV was shown at the 2024 Beijing Motor Show. Although these models were expected primarily for the Chinese market, these models demonstrate how Toyota’s electric vehicle portfolio is growing.
Conclusion
This is the second time Toyota and Subaru are making cars together, and their second bet is on the 2026 electric SUV. While the dynamics of this market and sometimes delays have influenced the companies’ long-term strategies, both auto giants retain their focus on electric vehicle further development. Thus, as global demand for EVs varies in the future, these new EV models’ development will likely be essential for the direction of electric mobility. Since Toyota and Subaru have built a name for manufacturing high-quality and reliable vehicles, their proposed EV might just as well stand a chance in the growing EV PUV segment.
